The Number Every Interior Designer Should Know (But Most Don't)
Quick. Without looking at anything. Do you know what your average revenue per project is this year?
Do you know how that compares to last year? Do you know which service type brings in the highest margin? Do you know your monthly break-even number?
If you just thought “I should know that...” then this post is for you.
I'm not here to make you feel bad. I'm here to tell you that most designers are running their businesses on gut instinct and a prayer. And there is a MUCH better way.
The number I want you to get obsessed with? Your break-even point.
Here's why it matters so much:
- It tells you exactly how much revenue you need to cover your costs each month
- It shows you how many projects or clients you need at any given time
- It takes the panic out of slow months because you KNOW your baseline
- It helps you make smarter decisions about hiring, expenses, and growth
1. Calculate Your Fixed Monthly Expenses
Start with the basics. Software subscriptions. Insurance. Your own salary (yes, pay yourself FIRST). Office costs. Any recurring fees. Add it all up. This is your floor.
2. Factor in Variable Expenses
Think about the costs that change with each project. Samples. Travel. Contractors you hire. Presentation materials. These are variable, but you can estimate averages based on your history.
3. Add a Profit Goal
This is where most people stop too soon. You don't just want to break even. You want to build a profitable, sustainable business. So add your target profit to your break-even number. NOW you have your real monthly revenue target.
4. Work Backwards to Your Projects
Once you know your monthly revenue target, divide it by your average project billing. That tells you how many active projects you need. Suddenly your pipeline goals get very specific and very achievable.
This is not complicated math. This is just clarity. And clarity changes EVERYTHING in how you run your business.
