Raise Your Financial IQ - ASAP!

I'll bet that you became an interior designer because you love being creative! You might even have decided this was the path for you because you really like to help people! But most designers did NOT pick this career path because they LOVE accounting. You know I'm right! šŸ˜‚

But this is a BUSINESS - and we all need to be smart about that business! So even if you hate math, even if you think "I don't like doing the boring bits!" ... you still have to stay on top of your financials. It's the only way to survive - and THRIVE!!

So how can you raise your financial IQ as quickly as possible??? I've got the inside track!

1. Know Your Reports

There are CRITICAL financial reports that every business needs - and you need to know them as well as you know your paint colors! They include:

  • Profit & Loss Statement
  • Cash Flow
  • Accounts Receivables & Payables
  • Budget
  • Balance Sheet

Even if you do have those in place, you HAVE to review them!! You should know where your business stands financially at ANY given moment. It helps you head off trouble, and know which areas you need to focus on.

Nothing kills a business faster than a lack of cash flow. In fact, it's the #1 reason that small businesses fail every year!

2. Bring in the Professionals

Isn't it strange that so many designers want our clients to understand WHY it's so important to hire a professional but then we think we can do our own accounting?? You need to live by the same ideals. Not only can these people help you keep your finances in good order, but they can also help you to understand how your business works, and how it can be improved! You need to hire these key people:

  • Bookkeeper - this is the data entry person who is going to keep up with your invoices and your record keeping!
  • Accountant - this person can help you analyze the numbers and find better ways to do business. They can also keep your taxes straight (that's HUGE!).
  • Mentor - I believe everyone needs a business mentor to help them rethink how they work and where they can improve!

Just like your own business, hiring professionals can really save your company TIME and MONEY!

3. Take Your Business SERIOUSLY

Stop treating your business like a hobby. It's the ONLY way you can be considered a SERIOUS professional yourself!! Where are you going wrong?

  • You aren't paying yourself. By not paying yourself, you're actually manipulating the numbers to try to look more profitable. AND what professional doesn't actually get a salary?!
  • You don't know your profit margins. Income is just one side of the story. Knowing your margins will show if you're actually profitable, and which services are making the most money.
  • You're using your personal bank account for your business. It takes very little time and effort to open a business banking account. This keeps things clean and clear when it comes to your clients' money vs. your own money.

Profit margins are the BEST indicator for how well your business is REALLY doing.

I KNOW that's a LOT - and it's on top of everything else you need to do to run your business!! 🫣 But we can do this, all it takes are good systems and accountability. In fact, accountability is at the CORE of my Design Project Blueprint. The systems that you set up will keep you on top of your reports, your meetings, AND your financial to-do list. So check it out and get going ASAP!

P.S. Designers tell me this course saved them hours, stress, and money... and gave them the tools to finally feel in control. If you’re ready to stop winging it, take a peek. šŸ’»āœØ
