Anatomy of a Perfect Design Presentation

Here it is - one of the most important opportunities to blow your clients' minds!! So how do you present your design to your clients?! This can be a BIG show for the client, and they are DEFINITELY anticipating some excitement! After all, this is exactly why they brought you on board. So the presentation is that showboat moment that should be as perfect as possible! Of course you'll include the basics:

  • Functional layouts
  • Amazing selections
  • Rooms that fit their aesthetic and personalities

The key, really, is HOW you craft and then present that perfect presentation. That's how you set yourself apart from other designers and make a name for yourself. So let's break down what you really need!

1. Start Strong

You could be the most creative and fantastic designer in the world, but if you skip one VERY important part of the presentation process, you're going to fall flat. And that is LISTENING to the client and what they really want!! Concepting that fabulous design needs to start with some basic work, like client questionnaires. Those should be in-depth and should include EVERY family member. And don't assume you know all the answers from their pinboards. Ask questions, too! Get ALLLL the information you can.

2. Understand the Money

Have an OPEN conversation about the budget. Do not ever assume that there is more money or that the clients will change their minds. Of course you can craft AMAZINGLY innovative ideas and schemes, but be sure it all still fits what your client wants. And if the budget will be pushed a little with your ideas, be HONEST about that from the beginning. There is nothing worse than a client sitting through an incredible presentation and then realizing that the budget won't cover anything they fell in love with. Don’t put your client in that position!

3. Tech Savvy

If you’re still pulling out boards with fabrics pinned to them, you might want to rethink your presentation methods! I love a good board with fabric on it, but there are SO many cool tools out there to make you look like a tech whiz. There’s 3D modeling, VR walkthroughs, and incredible online presentation software. You can even create an exclusive password-protected page on your website for your client! Bring out all the bells and whistles! They not only show that you’re in touch with the times, but they also create a sense that you’re definitely worth the money your client is investing.

4. Bells and Whistles

An important part of the perfect presentation is crafting a SHOW. You want your clients to be drawn into the story of their dream home and how YOU are going to craft that. That means setting the stage with candles, food and drink, samples of fabrics and tiles in gorgeous displays for the tactile factor, and any other way to put on a fabulous show. Woo your clients and show them that you know how to deliver a luxe experience!

With these tips, you can make the design presentation a must-see event for your clients. And they will definitely spread the word to other potential clients!
